About

The Peanut Gallery is a weekly love letter to the Shute Shield — the round wrap, the numbers behind it, and the odd hot take — written from inside the sheds by someone who still has to front up on Saturday.

The Shute Shield is the best club rugby competition in Australia. We’ll die on that hill, and we’ll bring snacks. Every week from April to September, Sydney’s grand old grounds serve up meat pies, miracle finishes, sin bins, and the very specific terror of a prop suddenly finding himself in open space. Most of it goes unrecorded. The Peanut Gallery exists so it doesn’t.

It started as a newsletter and it’s still a newsletter at heart — a proper round wrap that lands in your inbox, free, every week of the season. But somewhere along the way it grew a brain: a deep, searchable layer of player, club, match and season data that lets you go from “that was a great game” to “here’s exactly how great, and why.”

Who’s writing this?

The view from the cheap seats — written by someone in the expensive ones

The Peanut Gallery is written by James Kane — a current Shute Shield player. That’s the whole pitch, really: the wrap is written by someone who knows what it’s like to chase a kick into the in-goal at 4pm with cramp setting in, not someone watching from a press box with a long lunch in them.

It means the analysis comes with a bit of dirt under the fingernails. James knows which scrums actually hurt, which back-rowers are quietly running the show, and which results the ladder doesn’t quite explain. He’s also a tragic for the comp itself — the lifers, the converts, the bloke who’s been doing the BBQ at the same club for thirty years — and that affection runs through every edition.

Written by a current Shute Shield player. Read by anyone who’s ever loved a Saturday at the footy.

What you actually get

One email a week through the season. The full round wrap — results, talking points, the moments worth replaying, and the calls worth arguing about. The editorial focus is 1st Grade, because that’s the shop window and it deserves the spotlight — but the lower grades and Colts get their due too, because that’s where half the good stories live and all the future stars are hiding.

Warm, a little irreverent, occasionally wrong in public — but never lazy, and never phoned in. If you love this competition, this is the wrap written for you.

The data — the bit that got out of hand

What sets The Peanut Gallery apart from a good yarn down at the club is that we keep the receipts. Every claim in the wrap is backed by a stats layer built straight from official match sheets, refreshed all season, and free to dig through yourself:

  • Players & leaderboards — every player in the competition, across every grade, with season form and career totals. Golden Boot races, try-scoring charts, the lot. Filter by grade, search for anyone.
  • Clubs — a full profile for each club: form, results, squads and the season story told in numbers.
  • The ladder & season — standings, points for and against, bonus points and the run home, all in one place.
  • Compare — put any two players head-to-head, season stats across every grade plus career totals, with the better number lit up. Settle the argument before the second beer.
  • Tipping — win probabilities for the round ahead, so you can tip with conviction (and someone to blame when it goes wrong).

The numbers are compiled from official Sydney Rugby Union match sheets. We do our best to keep them honest — if you spot something that looks off, tell us.
